I have been slightly obsessed with chalkboards my whole entire life. I mean, I had a full-classroom-sized chalkboard in my bedroom growing up and enjoyed doodling on it daily. Yes, I am a true teacher at heart. But, these cute little chalkboards that are floating around Pinterest have inspired me to make my own.
So, off to Goodwill I went. I found an 11×17 lovely little painting, and although I wanted a larger & longer one, I decided to go ahead and get it and I can always get a bigger one later. The reason I chose this painting was because I loved the frame. I like the details and the layering of the edges. You will need one with a strong frame & wooden backing.
So, then I took the picture apart. There were little staples holding the wooden picture in place. Take apart the frame from the wood. Toss the actual painting part (I know, sad, it’s so pretty…ha!)
I used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Spray Paint in Sweet Cream for the frame.
Spray the frame and let it dry!
As the frame is drying, I went ahead and painted the wood part which will be the chalkboard.
I used Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Finish.
Coat the wood 2 to 3 times and let it dry. I let mine dry for 2 days. It said it would be dry in 4 hours but not to write on it for 2 days, so like a good little girl, I followed the directions.
I have heard that you can use the chalkboard spray paint, but that it doesn’t last as long and isn’t as good quality.
So, after it dried, I just put it back together and folded the staples down. Easy enough, right!?
Now, you have yourself a little chalkboard! I love the way it turned out!
I used plain ol’ Crayola colored chalk…
and announced our newest addition.

Yours turned out really cute! I made a few chalkboards out of old cabinet doors, I do like the ones out of frames though. I'm going to have to try it out!
