Being a mom of two, I’ve been through a lot of trial and error for fussy babies. What worked with my first baby doesn’t always work with my second and vice versa. I’m sure that if we end up having another baby, none of the things that work with them will work again! My first time around as a mother, I ended up with the fussiest baby on the block. I often thought what did I do to deserve this? Can’t we just put her back in my womb…she was much happier there!?
Needless to say, we pushed through all of the fussiness of the newborn stage to the fussiness of teeth and then the fussiness of just being a baby. Exactly 2 years later (almost to the day) we were blessed with our second baby. She was a much happier baby, but she of course still had her fussy moments. I feel like we got through one fussy period to land ourself in another fussy period, but isn’t that life? You just learn to live through it, navigate each new water and then give yourself a trophy when you figure it out! #momoftheyear (for a few days anyway…)
As babies, they were both fussy at times, especially since they both had tummy issues. When Laikyn was 4 weeks, she was diagnosed with MSPI (milk and soy protein intolerance) but we later found out that she was sensitive to Gluten as well. On top of that, she had a Class IV lip tie and a tongue tie that was 85% restricted. She literally screamed for days. It was so sad, until we figured it out and found what worked to soothe a fussy baby! Lennyn also had dairy, soy and gluten intolerance and a small tongue tie but she wasn’t as miserable as her sister. I think I knew what to expect, and also nothing could be as bad as the first time!
Both times, we had to find the things to help soothe the fussy baby, and both times we turned to the 4moms mamaRoo Baby Swing. With both babies we dealt with reflux, gas, “colic” and irritable bowels. I’m telling you…it’s not easy on a parent to see your baby in pain. I’m so thankful for these things that we found to help soothe a fussy baby!
7 Ways to Soothe a Fussy Baby
- Swaddle & Shush – This worked like a charm. Both of my girls loved being swaddled tight and shushed. The shush can be done by doing it with your mouth while holding the baby or using a sound machine. Babies actually sleep best with some sound, so the sound machine is a lifesaver.
- Turn Baby on Side or Stomach – My girls loved to lay on their tummies on our legs while we gently massaged her back. The last thing a baby wants when her tummy hurts is to lay on her back!
- Swing with the 4moms mamaRoo Baby Swing – Seriously. You need one. Since the girls had reflux and weren’t happy being laid down, we found that this baby swing was our best friend. We love that the mamaRoo Baby Swing is comfortable and moves just like you would. Also, it is designed for the baby to lay at an angle. The 45 degree angle is perfect for any baby with reflux, so it always soothed their bellies while it moved them. You can change the angle if your baby likes to be more flat, too. The sounds and movements can be changed and even used with your tablet or phone through bluetooth.
- Soothe by Sucking – If your baby will take a pacifier, this is soothing for them. If they won’t, breastfeeding or letting them suck on their fingers/hands is soothing to them. Self-soothing is a great concept for babies to learn when they are learning to sleep on their own!
- Sing – My babies loved being sang to! You don’t need to be a great singer or even a singer at all, just hum a tune or sing a little song to let that baby know you’re there and you love them!
- Sleep – Most of the time our babies are fussy because they are either hungry or need to sleep. Babies can get overtired much quicker than we think they can. Keeping them on a good schedule and getting them to sleep soundly is so important. If your baby is fussy, look at the baby’s schedule and see if it’s time for them to sleep? Sometimes babies just crave that (and so do their moms).
- Don’t Stress – The baby can sense your stress, so try to calm down and be calm for the baby! When you tense up, they can sense that! If you aren’t able to relax, hand the baby off to someone who is more relaxed for the moment and take a breather. I promise; it’s okay to need that!
Being a baby is tough work! Having a fussy baby is even tougher for the parent! I was so thankful for the mamaRoo Baby Swing and will soon sadly pack this away in hopes for another baby who needs it. Dear 4moms, thank you for creating the mamaRoo Baby Swing for my fussy babies!
It can be so stressful not knowing what to do and trying to figure it out in that moment. Some of the best advice we ever received was that our baby is a puzzle and we would be figuring them out for the rest of our lives. It couldn’t be more true. You will figure one thing out and then you’re dealt with another piece of the puzzle to put together. It’s just life, and take it with stride! Give yourself a pat on the back because you’re doing everything in this world to make your baby happy!
Just hang in there and know that you are not alone and that it doesn’t last forever. I promise.
*The mamaRoo Baby Swing is designed for use from birth until your child reaches a maximum weight limit of 25 pounds or can sit up unassisted or attempts to climb out, whichever comes first.*
