Christmas is such a huge deal in both of our families. When my husband and I got married, we started having our own traditions while blending traditions from both of our families. Nothing gets me in the Christmas Spirit more than starting these traditions and carrying them out throughout the season each year. Each year, we add a new tradition and try to stick with it!
Traditions are so special. I love learning what others do with their families during holidays and special seasons.

Traditions are such a huge part of the holiday season! I am sharing 20 traditions that we either do or would love to start today!
20 Christmas Traditions Worth Doing This Year
- Christmas Pajamas
One of my favorite traditions! We get out Christmas pajamas right after Thanksgiving to wear through the holidays! I love that our little family matches this year thanks to Old Navy! I found these in store a couple of weeks ago and we were all quickly obsessed! As you can see, we added a little Brother Bear in buffalo check and he’s just the cutest! Daddy is so busy this time of year, so he didn’t get in on the action…but I think we have enough pajama dancing to go around for him too! Old Navy has the best matching pajama sets for families! We buy from there almost every single year because the selection for pajamas for the whole family is unmatched! Plus, they’re always affordable and offering promos to help out with the cost of something that you won’t wear for very long!
We know and trust Old Navy clothing for our whole family! I know that my kiddos are going to be comfortable in what they wear when I buy from Old Navy! You can find all pajamas and pajama sets by shopping online and also in stores if you prefer to shop that way! Shopping online is about all this mama of 3 can do, but I do love that you can order online and pick up in store, too!
Something we do each year is help out a family in need! I do lots of my shopping for the family at Old Navy because I know the products are quality and I can get more bang for my buck, which allows us to do more for each family!
- Cookies for Santa
We do homemade sugar cookies and go all out for cookies for Santa! Then lay them out on a special plate the night before Christmas for Santa!
- Reindeer Food
Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve.
- Letters to Santa
We mail a letter to Santa each year! This year, they had the “mailbox” to mail Santa a letter when we went to see him at the mall!
- Christmas Movies
We alllllways watch Four Christmases and always watch Charlie Brown Christmas with the girls! There are several others that we love, too!
- Christmas Eve Present
We let the girls open one present each on Christmas Eve (as did my parents) which usually contains pajamas, a Christmas movie, hot chocolate and popcorn.
- Advent Calendar
The girls get these every year from my brother in law’s mom and it’s the sweetest thing! They look forward to opening the door each day and getting the candy! It also helps with number recognition and counts down to Christmas Day!
- Visit Santa for a Picture
We visit the same “Santa” each year at the mall! Then I keep the pictures in an album for them to look at each year! It’s my favorite and they LOVE looking at the pictures!
- Decorate the Tree
More like decorate the whole house, but growing up we had a real tree! I loved this but have done an artificial each year since being an adult! We also wear lots of festive clothes at Christmastime!
- Christmas Lights
My husband is a pilot so every year we beg him to take us up to look at Christmas lights from the air! It’s super special, but looking at them driving around with a hot cocoa or coffee (always my option) is the best!
- Christmas Books
Wrap 25 Christmas books and let the kids unwrap one a day to read until Christmas Day! This is something that I
- Christmas Parades
Small town Christmas parades are my favorite!!
This is one we will start this year!
- Elf on a Shelf
Our elves come December 1 and stay through Christmas. We don’t get really crazy, but the Sister Elves move to a new place each day. I guess next year we might have a boy elf, too! 😉
- The Kindness Elf
I think this is such a great idea!
- The Giving Manger
We started this tradition this year and it has been so amazing to see Laikyn and Lennyn help others. I love when it is her idea and when she lights up when I tell her to put a straw in the manger!
- Salvation Army Christmas Angel
Find a family to bless this holiday season. We get two angels from the Salvation Army tree to buy for, one angel for each of the girls at the same age as they are. They love it and it’s so great to teach them to give back to less fortunate children.
- Christmas Eve Church Service
We did these growing up and they were always a candlelight service. It is so special for me to do this and celebrate Jesus’s birth.
- Birthday Party for Jesus
Bake a cake for Jesus, put candles in and explain to the kids the reason we celebrate Christmas!
- Donate Your Time
Spend time blessing someone else by cooking, donating time, or just going out of your way to make someone’s Christmas brighter.
I want to know what YOU do with your family for the holidays! Have you heard of a special new tradition that you want to try? I have so many that I want to try, but I limit myself to one or two new ones for the year! This is my husband’s extremely busy season so I tend to overload myself with too much and have vowed to simplify this year! Let me know what you do!? I love hearing about traditions old and new!
Thank you to Old Navy for sponsoring today’s post! All content and opinions are that of my own!

The kids and I lovvve Santaland in Tyler, TX! It is the best drive through light display I’ve ever seen! Also, I want to start the tradition where the kids each pick out a present they would like and then go donate to other families that are not as fortunate. I really want them to grow up thankful, humble and blessed.
